I sat in traffic for about 30 minutes next to one of these and I had a good long time to stare at it. MY conclusion is that it’s a terrible design.
It looks like its wearing a giant diaper and its visual weight is, somehow, way more than its physical weight. They try really hard to tone down the 10 inches of car bellow the already tall painted body work and it works in pictures but it does NOT work in person. It’s really badly proportioned in real life.
Not even epic Utah scenery can save it.
The main problem is the back.
Everything is wrong with this. All. The. Things. SO much dead space it makes even the huge wheels look like little castors. The rear windows slaves the main window line and it looks terrible for it. A tiny squint of a window on a huge diapery butt.
Here is a 5 minute photshop fix
Instead of feeling compelled to draw an artificial character line from the headlights back to the taillights like literally every other thing on the road these days...it’s simply flat and purposeful which draws its own character line. Instead of doing the some from the vent its gone. This version drops hundreds of lbs of visual weight and gives a much more complete, less swollen look.
Tell me I’m wrong here.

Have the designers heard of symmetry? That license plate placement irks me so much.

It’s amazing how well they got a lot of their vehicles, especially the Velar. But this thing? It’s just awkward to the eyes, specifically the rear.

I love what you’ve done, I agree. I don’t mind the offset plate, though. I appreciate seeing something a bit different on the road.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:41 |

Yeah the offset plate is by far the least offensive thing about this vehicle.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:43 |

Asymmetry is good! And here it is an obvious reference to past Discos:
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:44 |

The plate bothers me very little. The rest of the design does though.

I want to osee what the rear-quarter blindspot vision looks like.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:46 |

From the thumbnail pic, I thought it was an Explorer.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:46 |

That is good—very good. Move down the door handles a bit and sell the design right back to JLR.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:47 |

That asymmetry with no spare tire, no bueno.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:47 |
|
That’s an insult to the explorer
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:48 |
|
Yeah, I would either ditch the front vent or move it, drop the taillights a little and make them bigger, relocate the handles and put a roof rack on there and I could be happy.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:49 |

probably substantially worse than mine even with the 3rd row up and blocking most of the 3rd row windows. For seriousness.

Discovery:
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:52 |

Ol’ Jerry wants form over function instead of function leading to form as was with Land Rovers older designs. I mean,
Can’t do that with the new Discovery, and I know a few Rover Shops are trying their damndest to do just that without much success.
Edit: Let us not forget the fact that McGovern also bitched about the fact that people wanted to put roof racks on it because it “ruined the lines”. What. a. doos.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 16:56 |

The only thing that really bothers me about it is the off-center license plate. It shouldn’t, but it does.

Poor Ponda Baba

The pillar concept of black/black/whoops/black is just visually confusing.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:08 |
|
its worse in person too because the pillar doesn’t even go to the roof, there is an inch gap that you can’t notice in pictures but is really noticeable in person. It looks like a mistake.

Haha! I was stuck behind one in traffic this morning for a good ten minutes and it was the first time I’d seen one in the wild. At some point while stuck behind it I turned to my wife and said, “The new Disco looks terrible”
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:10 |

I had the same epiphany.

I’m wanting the roof to be bodycolor...it might work better.

Check the tags. There is a surprise in there for you.

It shouldn’t. Thats true.

Not a lot.

That’s a weird looking minivan.*
*What 99% of all Disco’s will do for 99% of there life.
It blends in to all other SUV’s. It gets lost in the crowd.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:19 |

Im perfectly okay with the first owners minivanning around in it. Its what kept my Land Cruiser and My GX so nice for when I bought them.

HA! A star for you my good man, that gave me a chuckle.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:31 |

I will never comprehend the idea of increasing the beltline of literally every car on the road. I dont feel that it is any safer.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:32 |
|
I like it
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:38 |

I think its folly to imagine safety is the driving force for that choice on a vehicle as large as a discovery. There is plenty of door for impact strength without having a high beltline. This is purely aesthetic.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:39 |
|
I was ambivalent towards it until I had to stare at one in traffic. They are really bad looking in person.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:48 |

Can you fix the licence plate not center?
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:49 |
|
This is a real issue for many it seems. Let me see what I can do for you
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:49 |

Yeah, would’ve bought it for the TD6 and if they somehow came up with magical reliability. Looks don’t matter if you’re not driving it.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:55 |
|
It is just... wrong. I think mostly because there is no reasoning to it. It isn’t offset due to the spare on the tailgate. It serves zero function. Much like every other design element of this hodgepodge.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 17:56 |
|
I’d call that 80% better, but still a bit off.

It looks like it drove right out of grand theft auto. A video game company’s impression of what a luxury SUV should look like. Yeah, that’s it.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 18:34 |

Hmm, better... Still looks too Kia Soul for me
Is rather have a supercharged L322 kitted out
![]() 04/23/2018 at 18:36 |

oh I wont argue with you there.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 19:10 |
|
Wow you fixed some of the problems. I thought that these looked unwieldy and tall and the window line is exactly the reason.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 19:28 |
|
It’s really a poor design. I totally agree- looks like it’s wearing diapers. Who’s in charge of design over there? It’s really hideous.

this guy
for real.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 19:44 |

One of the locals has one in that red orange shade. It looks okay in a fussy Korean kind of way but it took me a couple of decent looks to make me realise what it actually was. And I didn’t get to that realisation by thinking it was a Range Rover first...which is how I identify every other current Land Rover.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 19:55 |
|
It only looks good from the front 3/4 view.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 20:02 |
|
yup, all the damage happens aft. In what I think is 100% the fault of
“having” to have the headlight line and the taillight line meet with a sloping window line and for literally no other reason. It’s one of those things where having to bow to design trends and rules results in bad design.
![]() 04/23/2018 at 21:43 |

To be more accurate, I thought it was a horrible refresh of the Explorer, and was wondering what in the hell Ford had done to it.

Dear Lord. Reminds me of this...
